CBD and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Cannabidiol and Rheumatoid Arthritis

CBD oil can be used to manage pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis. It can also reduce the inflammation in tissues of the joints affected by the autoimmune disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic condition and the symptoms usually worsen in due course of time. There is no known cure for the condition as the immune system of the body targets healthy cells, effecting causing the disease. One can only manage the symptoms to make them more bearable. CBD oil is fast emerging as one of the most effective ways to regulate or mitigate the severity of symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Overview of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is similar to psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. These disorders do not have an antigen. The immune system triggers the white blood cells to target the healthy cells in various joints of the body. This causes inflammation and pain. The most common targets are knees, hips, fingers and ankles. Most people who have rheumatoid arthritis affecting one or a pair of joints will subsequently develop the condition in other joints as well.

The pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis can be intense. While the degree of severity varies from time to time, the pain can be almost disabling at its most intense phases. The inflammation can also turn severe with time. People often experience loss of function as a result of the inflammation and pain in their joints.

All joints have a connective tissue known as synovium. This tissue is lubricated by synovial fluid. The lubricant ensures smooth functioning or movement of the joints. Due to some known reason, the immune system directs the white blood cells to target this synovial tissue. As a result the tissue thickens and this leads to damage in the surrounding bone and cartilage tissues. The synovial fluid may also dry up over time. The lack of lubricant and a more rigid synovium can eventually render the joint immobile. One experiences severe pain trying to move such immobile joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women than men. There is evidence that genetics plays a role in the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. Obese and overweight people are more vulnerable to the disease, so are ageing people. Those older than forty are at increased risk. People aged around sixty are more vulnerable.

Rheumatoid arthritis is the second most common disease of the joints, affecting millions of people around the world. The condition has affects beyond the joints. Most people suffering from the condition are likely to experience complications in skin, lungs, eyes, heart, nerve tissue and kidneys. There are quite a few conventional treatments for the disease but none can actually cure the condition.

CBD Oil for Rheumatoid Arthritis

CBD oil has emerged as a more effective alternative to prescribed medicines, especially painkillers. It is no secret that prescription drugs are strong and effective but there are quite a few side effects too. Painkillers can have long term effects on health if taken for a prolonged period of time. There is also a chance of abuse. Many patients, unable to bear the pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, resort to taking more painkillers than recommended. This leads to overdosing and overdependence, neither being particularly pleasant or desirable.

Cannabidiol can help in more ways than one. It can be used for pain management. It can also reduce the severity of the inflammation. Cannabidiol can actually prevent inflammations as well. There is some reason to believe that cannabidiol can even prevent the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. There is limited scientific research pertaining to this claim. More clinical studies are required but many doctors believe that regular use of pure cannabidiol oil can help avert the disorder.

CBD oil has a physiological role. It can act as an immune modulator. A specific type of white blood cells known as T-cells is responsible for effective immune responses. The T-cells have an active role in the initial phase of rheumatoid arthritis, also known as molecular onset of the condition. These cells do not cause rheumatoid arthritis but do facilitate the development of the condition. CBD oil can effectively suppress the activity and function of T-cells. The localized suppression can hence prevent the T-cells from playing an active role in the development of rheumatoid arthritis. It is this reason why some experts are hopeful of finding more evidence that can prove beyond doubt that cannabidiol can prevent rheumatoid arthritis.

THC, the psychoactive substance in cannabis or marijuana, is known for its effect on pain. However, it does not have any effect on inflammation. THC is also addictive so it is not the best substance to rely on for pain management in the long run. THC is also illegal in many states. Cannabidiol has a similar effect on pain as THC and it has an additional impact on the inflammation of tissues in the joints. Cannabidiol or CBD oil has already helped many people to manage their symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, to an extent that they have stopped taking prescription drugs, especially painkillers.
